If you're flying into Liberia and want to get to the beach fast, you're in luck. Playa Hermosa and Playas del Coco are two of the closest beach towns to the airport, and both are solid home bases for exploring Guanacaste. But they have distinctly different vibes, and choosing the right one can make a real difference in how your trip feels day to day.
I've stayed in Playa Hermosa and spent time in both towns across multiple trips. Here's an honest breakdown of what each one is actually like, what to do in the area, where to eat, and how to decide which fits your travel style.
Getting to Either Beach from Liberia Airport
Let's start here because it's one of the best things about this part of Costa Rica: the airport experience is genuinely easy.
Liberia International Airport is small, straightforward, and stress-free compared to most international airports. You won't find yourself lost in a maze of terminals. Getting through arrivals is quick, and the overall vibe is calm.
If you're renting a car, the process is just as smooth. Some rental companies have counters right at the airport. Others will have a shuttle waiting outside to take you to their nearby office. Either way, when you walk out of the terminal, someone will be looking for you. You don't need to figure out where to go. Just head outside and the rental company staff will find you.
From the airport, both Playa Hermosa and Playas del Coco are about 20 to 30 minutes away depending on traffic. After our last trip, we picked up our rental car, drove straight to our Airbnb in Playa Hermosa, unpacked, and were in full vacation mode within 30 minutes of leaving the airport. That kind of ease is hard to overstate after a long travel day.
Where Are These Beaches?
Both towns sit on Costa Rica's Pacific coast in the Guanacaste province. Playa Hermosa is slightly north of Playas del Coco, and they're only about 10 minutes apart by car. That proximity is important because it means choosing one doesn't lock you out of the other. You can stay in Hermosa and drive to Coco for dinner, or base yourself in Coco and head to Hermosa for a quieter beach day.
The region as a whole also works beautifully as a launching pad for the rest of Guanacaste, including waterfalls, wildlife experiences, adventure parks, and nearby national parks.
Playa Hermosa: Calm, Green, and Unhurried
Playa Hermosa has a pace that feels almost immediately different from the moment you arrive. It's quieter, greener, and more residential. There's no real party scene here, no strip of loud bars, just a calm beach town where the days move slowly and sunsets are genuinely beautiful.
The beach itself is wide with darker sand, framed by lush hills that wrap around the bay. The water is calm, clear, and swimmable, and depending on conditions you can snorkel, jet ski, or simply float. It's excellent for kids. Parking is generally easy to find near the beach, which makes coming and going with a family a lot less stressful than it is at more crowded destinations.
One thing to know: vendors do walk the beach selling things, and they will approach you. They're not aggressive or pushy at all, just part of the beach culture. A polite no gracias is all you need.
The crowd in Hermosa skews mixed in the best way. Families, couples, groups, long-term visitors. It doesn't feel like it caters exclusively to any one type of traveler, which makes it versatile for almost anyone.
If you want to feel like you're genuinely in Costa Rica rather than at a tourist resort, Hermosa delivers that feeling.
Playas del Coco: Lively, Walkable, and Full of Options
Coco has a noticeably different energy. It's larger, more developed, and built around convenience. You can park once and spend the rest of the day on foot, hitting restaurants, shops, tour operators, coffee spots, and the beach without ever needing to get back in the car.
The beach is more central to town life here, and there's a steady buzz throughout the day. The water conditions are similar to Hermosa, calm and swimmable, though the beach itself feels more active and social. Expect more people, more activity, and more of everything, which is exactly what some travelers want.
If you're the kind of traveler who likes options at your fingertips and prefers not to drive for every meal or errand, Coco is the more convenient base. It also works better if you're planning to book most activities through tour operators with transportation included, since you could theoretically skip the rental car altogether if you're staying centrally.
Playa Hermosa vs Coco: The Simple Version
Choose Playa Hermosa if you want calm, greenery, a quieter beach, and a more residential feel. You'll need a car to get to more restaurant options, but the serenity is worth it for a lot of travelers, especially families who want a relaxed home base.
Choose Playas del Coco if you want walkability, more restaurants and shops within easy reach, and a livelier atmosphere. It's the more convenient pick for travelers who prefer everything close by.
The honest truth is that we've made this decision based on which Airbnb looked best at the time of booking, and we've never regretted either choice. They're 10 minutes apart. You can experience both no matter where you stay.
Where to Eat Near Playa Hermosa and Coco
This area punches above its weight when it comes to food. Here's a breakdown of some of the spots we tried:
Aquasport is the one I'd send every first-time visitor to. It's right on the beach, feet in the sand, with a live DJ, incredible staff, and food that actually delivers. The vibe is relaxed but fun, and it's the kind of place you end up staying longer than you planned. Don't miss it.
Soluna Beach Bistro is a step up in terms of atmosphere and price point. It's outdoors, beautiful, and the kind of spot that feels special. Fair warning: the service is slow. Go when you're not in a rush and just enjoy the surroundings. Completely worth it.
Hacienda Blu Beach Lounge and Grill is Soluna's sister restaurant, and the experience is similar: beautiful setting, upscale feel, outdoor dining. If you loved one, you'll love the other.
Guayoyo Coffee House is where you go for breakfast. The croissant sandwiches are genuinely some of the best I had on the trip, and the coffee is excellent. If you're a morning coffee person, this one is non-negotiable.
Ristorante y Pizzería Bocelli is your answer for a casual dinner that hits the spot. Great pizza and quesadillas in a relaxed setting. A solid option when you want something easy and satisfying.
HelloHanny is the hidden gem of this list and the one most people overlook. It's a small, no-frills hole-in-the-wall, but the food is genuinely outstanding, portions are huge, the staff couldn't be friendlier, and it was quiet when we visited. Exactly the kind of place you're hoping to stumble onto.
Restaurante Almar has great food. We ordered to go so we didn't spend much time there, but the quality was solid and it's worth adding to your list.
Restaurante El Marino is your go-to for affordable, no-fuss food when you just need a quick bite. It's nothing flashy, but it's convenient and easy on the wallet.
Grocery Stores and Practical Stops
If you're staying in an Airbnb, grocery access in this area is easy and well covered.
Auto Mercado near Liberia is your best bet for a full grocery run. It's larger, well-stocked, and carries a good variety including imported items if you're missing something from home.
Super Luperon is much closer to Hermosa and perfect for quick trips and daily essentials. We leaned on this one constantly during our stay.
Super Compro is another convenient option worth knowing about, especially if you're stocking up for a group or a longer stay.
Being able to grab groceries easily makes a beach stay significantly smoother, especially when you're traveling with kids.
Things to Do in the Area
One of the biggest advantages of basing yourself near Liberia is how much is within easy reach. This isn't just a beach destination.
Llanos de Cortez Waterfall is one of the most accessible waterfalls in Guanacaste, and it's ideal for swimming. We visited on Christmas Day and had an incredible time. It's wide, dramatic, and doesn't require a serious hike to reach. A perfect half-day outing that pairs easily with other stops.
Ponderosa Adventure Park was one of the highlights of our entire trip. The safari, river tubing, and ziplining are all included, and the whole thing is well-organized and family-friendly without feeling overly commercial. If you only have time for one adventure day in this region, this is the one.
Diamante Eco Adventure Park is polished, easy to navigate, and genuinely enjoyable. The wildlife exhibits are well done, the coastal views are beautiful, and it's easy to spend several hours there. We visited twice across different trips and it delivered both times.
The Monkey Farm was unexpectedly meaningful. It's educational without feeling like a lecture, personal without feeling commercial, and my kids were fully engaged the entire time. The mission behind the farm adds a layer of depth that makes it stand out from typical animal experiences.
Witch's Rock Canopy Tour is a classic Costa Rica zipline experience with beautiful views over the forest canopy. It's well-run and efficient, meaning you're not waiting around, and it's an easy way to add adventure to your trip without committing an entire day.
Mirador Playa Hermosa is a quick but worthwhile stop if you're staying in Hermosa. The elevated views over the bay are beautiful, especially near sunset. Takes 20 minutes and is completely free.
If You Only Have 2 to 3 Days
If you're working with a short window, here's how I'd prioritize it:
Spend one full day at Ponderosa. It covers adventure, wildlife, and activity variety all in one shot and is the kind of experience that sticks with you. Follow it up with a half-day trip to Llanos de Cortez Waterfall, which is easy to pair with lunch nearby. And save at least one full day for doing absolutely nothing but the beach. Walk, swim, have dinner at Aquasport, watch the sunset. This region is at its best when you balance the adventure with genuine downtime.
Final Thoughts
Playa Hermosa and Playas del Coco are both excellent home bases near Liberia, and the fact that they're only 10 minutes apart means you're not really choosing between them so much as choosing your default starting point.
Hermosa gives you calm, nature, and a slower pace. Coco gives you convenience, walkability, and more built-in energy. Either way, you land at a small easy airport, pick up your rental car in minutes, and you're at the beach before you've had time to fully decompress from the flight. That kind of start sets the whole trip up well.
